Suns Williams Among Six Nba Coaching Changes

Detroit Pistons Fire Head Coach Monty Williams

Suns' Williams among six NBA coaching changes

Suns fire Williams after 2 seasons

Monty Williams has been fired as head coach of the Phoenix Suns after two seasons, the team announced Saturday. Williams led the Suns to the NBA Finals in 2021, but the team missed the playoffs this season after finishing 32-50.

The Suns' firing of Williams comes two days after the team announced that general manager James Jones had received a contract extension. Jones said in a statement that the team "appreciates Monty's contributions to the organization over the past two seasons."

Williams was hired by the Suns in 2019 after spending five seasons as an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs. He led the Suns to a 28-39 record in his first season, and then to the NBA Finals in his second season. The Suns lost to the Milwaukee Bucks in six games in the Finals.

The Suns fired Williams after the team missed the playoffs this season. The Suns finished 32-50, which was the fourth-worst record in the Western Conference. Williams was the only coach in the NBA to be fired after leading his team to the NBA Finals in the previous season.

The Suns are now searching for their third head coach in three seasons. The team has not made the playoffs since 2010.
